Familiar terms that embodies this purpose are, "club", "league", and "order", to mention a few. Early Development of SocietiesPrimitive Societies. Predominantly magical-religious societies. Memberships in primitive societies are dependent on military or civic virtues, wealth and social status, clan affiliation, outstanding accomplishments, or particular religious experience (eg sightings of supernatural beings). Ancient Civilizations. Professional associations of physicians, scribes, and artisans. The most active associations during this era were those related to religion and politics. Middle Ages in Europe In medieval times, guilds became social clubs, and gained importance in the life of the middle class. Their primary function was for the protection of artisans and tradesmen. |
